Scientists from Proteon Pharmaceuticals S.A., in collaboration with researchers from the Institute of Medical Biology Polish Academy of Sciences, have developed a new quantitative method for assessing the host range of bacteriophage-based products. The approach integrates results from multiple laboratory assays into a single, coherent metric, enabling reliable and comparable evaluation of bacteriophage activity against diverse bacterial strains.

The method was applied in studies on the BAFASAL® product and played an important role in its scientific evaluation, supporting the achievement of a positive opinion from the European Food Safety Authority. This work demonstrates effective collaboration between industrial and academic scientists, leading to the development of tools that facilitate both innovation and regulatory assessment.
